Summer Adventures 1999

I took an internship position at Electronic Arts in California for the summer of 1999. I drove across the country with Katy Ahern to get there, and afterwards I drove back with Ellen Mecklenburg. This is a page of pictures that I took.

We started in Ohio, and traveled rather directly to San Francisco via Route 70. We soon passed St. Louis, and the arch. There only 4 days for the trip, so we had to rush along a bit.
In Denver, we stopped for a movie. We stayed the night just up in the mountains. A fresh pine smell greeted us there. As we drove through the Rockies the Colorado river was next to us.

We made a small detour to Arches National Park

Climbing around this double arch was great fun. It took a while to make it up into the little hole, but was worth it.
Katy made it up without a problem. However, some passerby's didn't have it so easy. Some random guy out there owes me one for breaking his fall. (He said it was easier when he was a kid.)
On the dark side, a nice picture with Katy as the silhouette.
We were in a bit of a rush, but we made another hike out to see Landscape Arch.

Driving by Salt Lake, we took some time in the salt flats.

Here there's only an inch or two of water over the salt. The water is warm too, but the salt is a bit sharp on bare feet.

Katy and I visited Monterey, and saw some seals.

We had a nice lunch, walked all about, and saw more than just the seals.
Here's a nice picture of Katy on a rock.
Later, I came back to Monterey for my Open Water SCUBA diving certification.

In early summer a group of us went to Yosemite National Park.

This involved waking up really early and driving out past the windmills.

We hiked to the base of Yosemite Falls, and then along Mist trail to Vernal Falls. Here, I'm feeling the result of the mist from Mist trail. The path walks you right through the fall's mist, and drenched me.
Here at the top is Sheryl. It was a grand view.

The summer was great, I had plenty of fun in San Francisco.

Here's a picture of the Golden Gate taken from Fisherman's Wharf.

I left San Francisco with Ellen. We headed North
over the Golden Gate, and then went to
Muir Woods.

The majestic redwoods are not easily captured by a camera, but here is another beautiful tree at the entrance.

In Oregon, we went to Crater Lake.

Near the Watchman peak, you can see Crater Lake and the surrounding mountains.
We took a trail down to the edge of the lake. It was rather hot, but the view was just wonderful. It turned out a lot easier on the way down, compared to the way up.
At the bottom we took a nice rest on some boulders. Wow, that water was cold!

In the Columbia Gorge, we stopped at the Multnomah Falls.

We spent two days in Yellowstone National Park.

The Mammoth Springs have such a wonderful texture. The terracing shows some fractal qualities.
Of course, we stopped by Old Faithful.

I've always loved the mud pots.
I couldn't help making a color modification too.

Since the fires of 1988, the forest has been born anew. Here are many young trees.
This picture shows a nice collage of grassland, forest, and burned forest.
We ran into this interesting truck a few times.
The many hot springs were nice to see in the evening, as the sun lit up the mist.
Here Ellen and I stand as silhouettes in the mist.

On the way across Wyoming, we stopped at Devils Tower.
Left by an ancient volcano, it's quite impressive. The Prairie Dogs are just crazy.
The last national park we stopped at was the Badlands. Here I am up a very tall portion of Door and Window.
